our community caregivers

providing temporary homes for children

Sometimes parents and family members need a break from parental responsibilities to focus on their own wellbeing and healing.

Our Community Caregivers Team seeks to help children, families and communities by finding familial supports to care for children until the parents or families are able to reunite.

Our Community Caregivers workers are actively engaged in shifting away from the 'foster system' model — and instead, focus on supporting extended family and community members to care for young people. This helps ensure that family, community and cultural connections remain intact. By March 2022, we had a total of 26 kinship homes, 11 Indigenous foster homes and 6 non-Indigenous foster homes.

Caregivers are selected and vetted carefully, and have additional rooms in their homes to ensure the young person has some privacy. Our caregivers are nurturing and caring adults who have the maturity to provide care and guidance to young people. They come from all walks of life; may be married, single or partnered; may have no children or have a family, may work full time or be stay at home parents. Regardless of where you live, our caregivers can support young people in each of the 5 communities we serve, as well as in Merritt.
