supporting and empowering families

The Family Prevention Team is responsible for supporting our parents, couples, and families in actualizing their holistic wellness goals, building parenting and family capacity, and creating effective strategies to ensure families are healthy and whole.

The Family Prevention Team consists of Family Wellness Navigators and a Relationship Navigator. Each navigator works with families to support them in creating self-directed wellness plans, with the focus on building healthy families, addressing their unique differences and barriers. Navigators also support the men’s group and women’s group.

Family Navigators provide individual supports to many families, working person-to-person to meet people where they are at, listen and support people in the least intrusive way. We focused on gaining trust with our families and communities, building capacity through strengths-based approaches with cultural sensitivity. We meet people where they are at and walk with them, not ahead or behind them. Family Navigators assist with referrals to other service providers, developing family plans with clients, building trust, and showing families the respect they deserve.

Family Circles

Family Decision Making uses an Indigenous lens, in which care of and decision making for children is considered a natural responsibility of the extended family and community. In an extension of this, Family Prevention Services use Family Circles as a meeting of the child’s immediate family coming together with extended kin and members of the child’s community. This allows the circle to address concerns in a preventative manner. The intention of this process is to make sure the power stays with the family, and the process is led by the family.

There are many reasons families may choose to gather in a circle.  Some of these reasons may include reunification, kinship care planning, prevention circles to address concerns or family emergencies, and youth transition circles to support a young person as they transition to adulthood.

A Family Circle is a facilitated meeting designed to bring all voices together to determine what is best for young people and families. It recognizes and acknowledges the right and capacity of First Nation families and communities to care for, protect, and plan for their young people. This is a voluntary process including the young person, family, and friends designed to provide families with information they need to make decisions, inform families of services and resources available, and to help avoid the court process.

A circle coordinator will act as a neutral 3rd party to support the gathering, prepare participants, and guide the meeting in an unbiased fashion. Families can refer themselves to Family Circles, or can be referred by SCFSS Staff, community members, Band Representatives, or other service providers.

Relationship Wellness

This program is designed to help couples identify and acknowledge their challenges and areas needing growth. It works to provide educational learning using cultural teachings. Couples will build a stronger foundation of trust and connection to self, family, community, and culture.

Men’s Group

Men’s group works to help men in making personal change and growth in their lives. Bringing a balanced and healthy approach, men will be helped to recognize where their healing needs to occur and be allowed to face these challenges with a dedicated support network. Together, men will engage on the land and using cultural practices to bring these teachings to their everyday life.

Women’s Group

Women’s Group creates a safe place for women to meet and discuss matters of importance to them. Through this program women can create connections and support each other, while building their skill in presenting, crafting, and learning.  To support women so they can focus on their wellness, the Cultural and Language Team provides cultural teaching to the participants’ children and/or young people in an alternate location.
