KINSHIP CARE

Kinship Care is where the child’s living arrangements are with extended family or someone close to the family who has a strong relationship with the child.  The arrangement allows the child to maintain connections with siblings, extended family and community.

If a parent is unable to care for a child, they may propose a care provider and arrange a safe alternate living arrangement with a relative or person who is known to the child or who has a cultural or traditional responsibility to the child.

SCFSS is able to assist the parent in identifying and selecting a person who can safely care for their child.

Kinship care offers both stability and continuity for the child until the child can return to the parent’s care.  There are informal and formal out of care agreements.
