At Scw'exmx Child and Family Services Society (SCFSS), we support caregivers who play a critical role in the well-being of children and youth in our communities. Our Community Caregiver Team ensures caregivers receive the resources and assistance needed to provide care while maintaining children’s connections to family, culture, and community.

our approach to caregiving
SCFSS prioritizes family and community-based care, moving away from the traditional foster care model. We connect children with temporary homes within their extended family or community, preserving cultural ties and family connections. Community-based care enables families to focus on their own healing and well-being.
Caregivers are selected based on their ability to offer nurturing, stable environments. SCFSS provides support for caregivers in all five of the communities we serve, including Merritt.
supporting our caregivers
Our caregiver support goes beyond financial assistance – SCFSS focuses on building capacity by preparing caregivers to manage different situations. Training opportunities can include: Crisis Intervention training for emergency support, comprehensive Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder training to enhance understanding, First Aid and Safe Babies training. Caregivers can also access peer support and knowledge sharing opportunities with other caregivers by attending the BC Foster Parents Association Conference.
Throughout the year, SCFSS creates spaces for caregivers to connect, share resources, and discuss important topics. Events like 'Staycation' offer relaxation and cultural learning, while the 'Summer Fun BBQ' provides fun activities for caregivers and children to bond.
celebrating caregivers
We regularly recognize caregivers’ hard work by offering gift cards, thank-you notes, and holiday gifts. Additional financial support is provided during the back-to-school and holiday seasons, and we hold contests to encourage engagement in key activities.
strengthening connections and capacity
Our team emphasizes building strong relationships and supporting reunification efforts. We work to ensure that caregivers have the tools, training, and support they need to care for children while enhancing long-term planning for youth. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive community where caregivers and children feel empowered and connected.
At SCFSS, we are dedicated to being a reliable and caring presence for both caregivers and the children they support. We strive to foster a community of healing, growth, and connection for all involved.
